THz spectroscopy presents a useful tool for characterizing the low-energy intramultiplet transitions of rare earth doped materials, which have yet to be studied in depth. This project provides background on the physics of these systems, an introduction to relevant spectroscopy techniques, simulations and preliminary calculations showing predicted absorption spectra, and preliminary spectroscopic data. Future possibilities for optimal ion-host combinations are also given. It is found that THz spectroscopy is a promising technique for studying these systems.
