Development of a System to Rapidly Identify Molecular Interactions

To fully understand intracellular signaling that controls bodily processes, the identification and characterization of ligand-receptor interactions is necessary. A novel system has been proposed that utilizes the aversive reflex neuron in Caenorhabditis elegans to identify activating ligands via aversive behavior. This Major Qualifying Project aimed to develop the necessary components to effectively run such a system. At the conclusion of the project, the team improved the existing system components, created automated scripts to identify the chemical type and ran small scale experiments to test these components. The machine learning scripts developed by the team had superior accuracy (68.8±6.3%) in comparison to manually identifying (50.7±8.2%) chemical type of each spot.
