Abstract

A design project was undertaken to develop a device for measuring the reaction force that snow exerts on a ski when the ski carves or skids through the snow. This device was based on a model for a turning ski derived from metal cutting theory. Following an axiomatic design process, a device was designed, fabricated, and constructed with the intent of being able to transport the device to actual ski trails and taking measurements of snow as it exists in all of its varying conditions. The device was tested and shown to require additional modification in order to produce results accurate enough to be considered useful.
