Abstract
A modular approach to the synthesis of cubic octupolar molecules is proposed wherein the cubes are envisaged as dimers of squares. Methods are developed for the synthesis of molecules with square topology and dimerization of these square-shaped molecules into the required octupolar geometry. Calix[4]arenes with two cyano groups on alternate rings are used as square-shaped molecules and tetrahedral Cu? and Ag? ions are used as dimerizing agents. Results from the synthesis of octupolar Cu- and Ag-dimers of 25,27-dihydroxy-26,28-bis(propyl)calix[4]arene-11,23-dicarbonitrile are presented.
