Pratt & Whitney Group
Abstract from database: The goal of this project, held in conjunction with Pratt & Whitney, was to reduce the amount of scrap in turbine vanes as a result of the laser drilling manufacturing process. After an investigation using statistical data collection and analysis methods, several machine/tooling maintenance systems were devised to reduce the scrap levels. After monitoring these systems for one month, scrap levels dropped drastically, saving P & W approximately $30,000. Using these systems, P & W stands to save over $500,000 per year in scrap.
