Abstract
An experimental study was conducted on aluminum 2024 alloy to determine the effects of the quenching process parameter in a polymer quenchant. In addition to Aqua-Quench 260 polymer quenching, air quenching was utilized. Hardness testing and microstructural analysis were performed following an artificial age treatment. It was found that polymer quenching resulted in an experimental Rockwell B hardness of 78-80, while air quenching resulted in an experimental Rockwell B hardness of 52-54. However, the microstructural changes as observed by optical and scanning electron microscopy were insignificant. Both polymer and air quenched samples had an ASTM grain size number of approximately 6.
