Abstract

Artemisinin, a secondary metabolite of A. annua, is a Sesquiterpene endoperoxide lactone. In other plants, sesquiterpene lactones have been found conjugated to other molecules. This project looked for the presence of AN conjugates through chemical and enzymatic hydrolysis. HPLC and TLC analysis were used to detect the presence of artemisinin released by these treatments. The initial data indicated that such conjugation may be present, but a more thorough evaluation in fact demonstrated that no AN was produced by treatments that would hydrolyze a number of commonly found in conjugated molecules.
