Abstract

Current methods for preparing Metal Organic Frameworks (MOFs) have several major limitations with respect to the variety of structures possible, post synthetic modifications, and ability to incorporate more than one metal into the framework. This project begins the exploration of a new synthetic strategy applicable to MOF as well as dendrimer synthesis. This research investigates using simple functionalized carboxylic acids combined with zinc oxide to synthesize novel octahedral zinc carboxylates with a tetrahedral Zn4O core. IR spectra combined with elemental analysis was the primary method used to confirm synthesis of the desired product. The subsequent modification of the free functional groups by conventional synthetic methods was also investigated.
