Abstract

Disinfection of wastewater is necessary to protect public health; however, chlorination can produce unwanted byproducts and harm ecosystems. This project examined using chlorine, ultraviolet light, or a combination of both to disinfect secondary effluent from the Blackstone Wastewater Treatment Plant. Disinfection was evaluated by dosing wastewater samples with different amounts of chlorine and UV light, and comparing coliform reductions. Results showed that while all treatment options were effective, the combination system balances cost with effectiveness and meets regulatory requirements.
