eBay's search engine keeps search indices in main memory and employs a backup system for rebuilding these indices. We created an intelligent and efficient persistent storage backup system for the search engine. We save the latest state of each eBay item, discarding outdated information and reducing rebuilding time. We created an effective method for storing these variable length states to disk, and employ two indexing systems to allow for fast update and retrieval of these item states.
