Abstract

Fractal in nature, aerogels form through diffusion limited aggregation. By confining the growth of such a substance in varying geometries, the effect confinement can be seen. By creating molds for the differing geometries, samples that contain bulk and confined aerogels from the same mixture can be produced simultaneously. By using x-ray diffraction, the fractal dimensions of these samples and the length scale over which they are fractal can be determined. Differences between bulk and confined aerogels will also be determined.
