Abstract

In axisymmetric finite element models, two-dimensional elements are used to model three-dimensional structures exhibiting symmetry about an axis of rotation. The integrand yielding the stiffness matrix for axisymmetric elements contains terms of the order 1/r. Numerical integration schemes such as standard Gaussian quadrature typically applied in practice yield inaccurate results. This research focuses on techniques of numerically integrating the stiffness matrix of axisymmetric elasticity finite elements, and discusses examples for accurate integration and accurate finite element solutions.
