Abstract

Newcastle disease virus (NDV) is an avian pathogen that is capable of devastating localized livestock populations in a matter of weeks. When hemagglutinin-neuraminidase (HN) I175 is mutated to a glutamic acid in the Australia-Victoria (AV) isolate, all HN function is lost, however this loss of function is not seen in the L-Kansas (L) isolate. Through mutation of chimeric HN proteins we have identified four amino acids that together, rescue function of I175E AV HN.
