Abstract

Opiates have been used for centuries to treat pain. The use of opiates on horses produces dysphoric side effects. The [mu]-receptor has been sequenced in five organisms. An equine cDNA library was created from horse brain. The use of rt-PCR to construct a probe of or clone directly the [mu]-receptor was ultimately unsuccessful. Once cloned, further experiments to elucidate the signal transduction pathway, distribution of receptor throughout the CNS, and binding kinetics may lead to more effective analgesics.
