Abstract

Porcine Circovirus Type 1 (PCV1) third viral protein (VP3) has been shown to induce apoptosis in cancer cells. Sequence analysis revealed that PCV1 VP3 contains an N-terminal region homologous to its apoptotic homolog, VP3 of Chicken Anemia Virus, and a C-terminal extended region. This study successfully developed a method to quantitatively assess and identity the region responsible for PCV1 VP3’s apoptotic activity. Our apoptosis studies suggest that the C-terminal region is responsible for the robust apoptosis-inducing property of PCV1 VP3.
