Abstract

Quenching is to rapidly cool metal objects that are at high temperatures from manufacturing. The goal of this project was to model a gas quenching furnace with a part loading in the computational fluid dynamics program FLUENT. Within the program, parameters such as gas velocity and temperature were varied to determine their effect on the convective heat transfer coefficient, and heat transfer rates were obtained. FLUENT results will be compared to experimental results for a full-picture understanding of gas quenching.
