Abstract

The American Superconductor Corporation (ASC) of Westborough, Massachusetts is developing a continuous manufacturing process for coated conductor superconductors. This MQP deals directly with the development of a continuous annealing process for the substrate layers of these superconductors. The goal of the MQP was to design a method of producing 250 meters of annealed substrate within one hour. This goal was achieved through communication with furnace manufacturers as well as ASC. A multi-shelved furnace that can support multiple strips of the substrate was designed and the method was proved with an experimental furnace built by the team at the ASC Westborough facility. The results from the experimental furnace proved that the proposed furnace design would produce the desired material texture. Price quotes were also obtained from furnace manufacture[r]s should ASC decide to use this method of annealing.
