Abstract

The investigation and improvement of the current routing process at Coppus Engineering, a manufacturer of steam turbines, have been conducted. The project involves the investigation of cycle times for various parts with such topics as lean manufacturing and work cell layout. Other topics examined include worker motion, work in progress, and work sequences associated with various parts machined in the plant. In order to reduce cycle time and improve material handling, work cells were setup which in turn reduce work in progress, foster team-work and continuous communication among workers, and reduce the distance traveled by each part. Moreover, the work cells allow parts to flow more efficiently from one workstation to the next and improve the plant layout.
