Abstract

The material properties of cancellous bone are often adversely affected by degenerative bone diseases, such as osteoporosis. Quantification of elastic modulus and intrinsic permeability provides an understanding of the tissue's biphasic structure-function relationship. The goal of this project was to design a fixture and protocol using Darcy's Law to measure the triaxial permeability of cancellous bone. Experiments revealed the anisotropic and heterogeneous nature of bone. The resulting methodology presented accommodates future investigation of the relationship between tissue deformation and permeability.
