Abstract
The objective for this Major Qualifying Project was to design and test a torque limiting safety binding for skiboards. Although initially believed to be safe as equipped with non-releasable bindings due to the relatively short length of skiboards, the rate of injury occurring with skiboard users is consistent with the rate that occurred with alpine skiers more than 40 years ago, prior to the introduction of safety bindings. Utilizing Professor Norton's design method, a safety binding was developed that exhibits the unique ability to limit the torque transmitted to the lower leg of a skiboard without releasing entirely from the boot. The new design was tested and confirmed to possess the ability to function properly with skiers up to 168 lbs. in weight.
