The team designed an electromechanical surgical forceps prototype. The assistive device could improve suturing for surgeons with limited hand motility and strength. The team analyzed the mechanism kinematics and created ProEngineer models for manufacturing by CNC machining and stereolithography rapid prototyping. Electrical components were designed and integrated with the mechanical components. The device produced three distinct movements: ulnar deviation, flexion/extension, and translation of forceps tip. Further improvements were recommended for design, manufacture and surgical robotic applications.
