Abstract

This project develops four alternative designs of cable-stayed bridge elements based on the Charles River Crossing in Boston, Massachusetts. Inverted-Y and double diamond towers were designed, along with beam-and-girder and box-girder decks. The structural analysis programs RISA2D TM and STAAD-III TM were used to assist in the design and analysis. The four designs were integrated to create four permutations of one tower and one deck, and qualitative assessments based on these permutations were conducted for cost based on material weight, structural stiffness based on element deflection, and aesthetic appearance.
