Abstract

This project, assisted by Tufts University Department of Human Factors, and New England Medical Center, presents the design of a laparoscopic surgical assist device that holds the laparoscope, but allows the surgeon to reposition the scope to any desired position, with only one hand. The final design consists of a tube that mounts to standard operating table rail clamps, a flexible arm that supports the camera, a ball joint that allows the camera to rotate, and a cylindrical joint that lets the camera zoom in and out, and rotate about its axis. A working prototype of this design was constructed and then tested. Recommendations for future development of this product were made based on the testing results.
