Abstract

This study investigated various techniques used in catalysis including measurements of the total and metallic surface areas of catalysts and kinetic measurements. These techniques were applied to methane combustion over different palladium and platinum catalysts. Three bimetallic Pt-Pd catalysts were investigated in an effort to find catalysts with higher turnover rates. The turnover rates, calculated on standardized conditions, revealed that these bimetallic catalysts were not more active than the nonmetallic palladium catalysts currently used for methane combustion.
