We hypothesize that recent and future improvements to Virtual Reality will allow engineers to \napply this technology to the engineering design process. Two case studies were conducted using Virtual Reality in all steps of the design process. In the first case study, a methodology was created to optimize the design of a mechanical component. The second case study was developed to design a custom device for a medical application. In both cases, we demonstrated the use of 3D Digitization and utilized VR as a mesh editing and visualization tool. Through these case studies we found that VR has the potential for wider application to the engineering design process, however, exciting and expected future developments on this and related technologies are still required.
