Abstract

Currently the world is very dependent upon fossil fuels to satisfy the global energy consumption. However, the adverse effects of fossil fuels necessitate the development of alternative energy sources, e.g. solar energy. The main limitation with modern solar cells is the cost, with 60% of the cost of silicon solar cells is the silicon layer. BiI3 is one potentially attractive alternative to silicon. However, BiI3’s efficiency is limited compared to other solar cell types. It is hypothesized that improving grain size of BiI3 can improve its efficiency. In this study, BiI3 was vapor-deposited onto a BiI3 seed layer to improve grain size.
