In this project, we developed a design matrix for achieving “net zero” emissions for a neighborhood in the city of Worcester, MA. This mid-scale approach is an opportunity for utilization of sustainable technologies at large scale and resource sharing at community level. The Net Zero Neighborhood (NZN) concept integrates FEW-systems to reduce energy use and offset any energy requirements that cannot be met by independent design strategies. A design matrix for the NZN was developed to investigate the various design strategies for a sustainable city. A neighborhood in Worcester MA is used as a case study to evaluate the impacts of this approach.
