Edward Whymper's ascent of the Matterhorn in 1865 ended in tragedy when four of his companions fell 4000 feet to the deaths. Later in 1865, Gustave Doré published prints of their triumphant arrival on the summit and the tragic accident after consulting with Whymper on the appearance of each location. These scenes were widely reproduced in lithographs. This version of the print, "Die Ankunft auf dem Gipfel," appeared in Theodor von Wundt's history of the peak published in 1896.
