Balmat monument in Chamonix, 1878

Public Deposited

This bronze medallion of Jacques Balmat was dedicated in Chamonix on August 11, 1878. Geologists proposed a memorial in 1875, and the Société Geologique de France and Club Alpin Français jointly raised the funds for its completion. The sculptor Justin-Chrysostome Sanson executed the medallion based on a portrait of Balmat by Bacler d'Albe. The medallion was mounted on a piece of granite taken from the lower section of the Glacier des Bossons. For many decades located at the base steps of the church in Chamonix, the monument was later moved in closer to the entrance of Maison de la Montagne, home of the Compagnie des Guides de Chamonix.
